Hermes II

Hermes raised His cap to see

the dark nights I had spent

in the recesses of my soul

with just a glimmer

          of opulence coming

          through the contour

of the crescent moon

image attractively vague

yet imploring me

to digest the meaning of humanness

          and putting aside my facial

          I stood against the obstacle

          of my flesh demanding, longing.

Was it then possible

to make myself as invincible

as the wooden window shutter

against the southern wind?

          The answer sprang up slowly

from within a gap of my mind

as if a thundering no

between the thighs

of the naked woman

          who kneeled almost

          innocently on my empty bed

          posing quite imprudently

like a statue I had always admired

nymph I had always dreamed

         injured memory of my kin

         hyacinth planted in my pot

always first to announce

the vernal equinox
