REPETITIONS, SECOND SERIES

Philomela

Thus, even with her tongue cut out, Philomela narrated

her torments by weaving them, one by one, with patience

and faith on her chiton, in modest colours — purple,

grey, white and black — as it always happens with

the works of art — black is always in abundance. All

the rest — Procne and Tireas with his axe and their pursuit

         in Daulis

even the cutting out of the tongue, we consider insignificant,

we forget of them. Her chiton is enough,

the secret, the precise and her metamorphosis at the critical

moment in a nightingale. Yet, we say: without all the rest,

the insignificant things, would there had existed this exquisite

chiton and the nightingale?
