THE BRIDGE (Excerpt)
Again I forget and become absent-minded. As if trying
to justify my delay and my infidelity — yes — by mobilizing
the most unjustifiable things; perhaps this way I might
show you how defenseless I am, how unjustified; and perhaps
I might get your forgiveness, even your sympathy, and perhaps
above all I might show you what I can’t prove, this sublime
dimension of the amazement
that wipes my mistakes and also yours, amazement
that exists yet it can’t be proved nor can be shown,
that doesn’t ask for sympathy or forgiveness, and,
as it always remains unjustified, it justifies our struggles
and our entire life.
