Signals

Later, the statues were totally covered by the shrubs. We

didn’t know

whether the shrubs grew taller or the statues shorter. Only

a big, bronze hand was discerned over the bulrushes

in an unsuitable and horrible benediction. The lumberjacks

passed down the road, didn’t turn their head at all. Women

didn’t sleep with their husbands. During the night we heard

the apples as they fell one by one into the river; and then

the stars, as they quietly sawed that bronze, raised hand.
