“Sit down, Mr. Jonas” Father Jerome said and showed him the other chair in front of the desk. Anton took the seat. He looked around waiting for Father Jerome to say something. Father Jerome was a big-sized fellow with dark hair and even darker eyes; his face surely looked priestly though at the same time hard, rugged and one could easily discern a fire burning in those eyes. His thin nose, thin lips, small piercing eyes completed the characteristics of a man who observed everything, who missed nothing, who didn’t let anything go by him without taking in what it related to, what it could be used for, how it would be beneficial to him or the facility, how he could get a good return to each effort he put forward. He looked at Anton as if examining him and being momentarily satisfied with the first impression he smiled saying.

“You’ll go and find Mr. Kelly and make sure you follow him everywhere he goes and observe everything he does since we expect you to replace him come September this year when he retires. Is all this to your liking?”

“Yes father, it’s all good. Thank you.”

“Certainly I see in you one who will stand by this institution and serve its purpose with utmost respect while you look after all needs. When an issue arises which we can’t take care ourselves we hire the qualified person for the job, remember that and come with your suggestions with no hesitation. We provide food and accommodation for all our personnel, unless a person chooses otherwise; you need accommodation Mr. Jonas?”

“No, I live with my parents” Anton said.

“Very good then” Father Jerome said.

No one else uttered any word, other than their greeting, since the head master did all the talking, what else could they add to his comments?

“I understand. I’m good with all this. Should I now go find Mr. Kelly?”

“Yes, you may do so. But before you leave have in mind that this huge facility is run by us here, and a few more people in various positions; Father Nicolas, our human resources man, who you have met, and Sister Helen, the geography teacher are on duty supervising the eating area of our School, and right now the children are having their breakfast. We also have two cooks, two kitchen assistants and four maids who are responsible for the rest of the needs of this facility. In any case you’ll see and learn all these things as it goes. You may go now; welcome to the Kamloops Indian Residential School Mr. Jonas.”
