THE GATE

Excerpt LII

                                    I’m still dreaming

I still hope I struggle, he said, don’t tell me anything,

             oh eunuchs

desperate, crippled men with no phalli, no testicles

with your darkness magnified and hidden in darkness.

Have you seen the bird, the flag, the girl with the placard

the boy with the binoculars up on the hill

the old woman with the bandage over her eye

the camera at the seashore

the sack of potatoes at the customs office

the cleaner with the carnation in her hair

the tiny yellow flower on the wall, it was saying yes

to all, the postman with his bag

the kite over the statues, its tail touched my lips

momentarily, it flew up so I could sing.
