Excerpt LIX

A bird made of silver cigarette paper was perched

              on his shoulder.

The thin pregnant girl held two babies on her chest,

              she wasn’t singing.

The four dogs were looking at the floor planks

with a long bark of last night’s moon held between

              the teeth; the second woman

fat and with big tits were holding the metal handle

              of the seat

upset with the shaking of the train,

the lights that came on although it was noon,

with the tunnel that didn’t seem to end; she was

touching her left nipple from outside her blouse.

The third man with his violin hanging off his chin,

like the beard of Moses, when he strokes his violin the

combs of the young vendor jumped up off his basket.

The twelve-year-old grabbed a red comb in the air

and started combing his hair while he sang with

a more relaxed, childish, almost Christmassy voice.
