Duty

He looked at the immense

blue horizon

out of his open window

ascetic serenity spread on his face

as he rubbed over his sink

a plastic bag with his leftover

pieces of bread collected

over a week and after a persistent

rubbing and squeezing he ended up

with a hand-full of crumbs.

He smiled, put on his shoes,

walked to the east of the house,

about thirty yards distance,

to a huge boulder with a flat part

on one side where he emptied

his crumbs carefully; with the same

happy smile he walked back to the house

and standing by the door he noticed

the flock of sparrows charging

the breadcrumbs; happy with that

he walked out toward the village.

He arrived early at the café.

He looked as if he was

floating in the air and he had

the same smile on his lips

as if the bliss of the whole Universe

was bestowed unto him

and this because he had done

my duty, he said to me

and I saw a flock of sparrows in his eyes

a flock of birds chirping ancient Greek

learning the new language of LOVE
