Morley would have a ball … prepare him for his own family. And as for your job, I just know your mother would be happy to help you out by taking them during the day when you’re working the day shift. And when you’re on nights, Morley will be with them.”
It was Tyne’s turn to stare. “You’ve got all this worked out, haven’t you, Doctor? And this isn’t the first time you’ve thought about it, is it?”
He stepped forward and patted her shoulder. “Well, now that you mention it, it did cross my mind when Lydia talked to me about the kids yesterday. Just seemed like the perfect fit to me.”
“I see. And have you also consulted my mother?”
He smiled his most engaging smile. “No, I think you can do that better than me, don’t you?”
Tyne shook her head in a gesture of resignation. “You know, of course, that I have to consult Morley before I can say anything more to you or to anyone.”
“Of course.”
“And as for my mother ….” Tyne felt the heaviness return to her heart. “I don’t know when I’ll be able to talk to her about it. One of Jeremy’s best friends was killed in an MVA last night. I have to go tell them when I get off duty. Barry was like another son to our family.”
Dr. Dunston sobered. “Heck, Tyne, I’m sorry. I didn’t know. Anyway, this business about Lydia’s kids, it’s just a thought. It’s entirely up to you.” He tucked the chart under his arm and turned towards the corridor. “I’ll go talk to Lydia before she gets her pre-op medication.”
Tyne watched him take a few steps down the hall. “Dr. Dunston,” she called.
He stopped and turned around.
“Who’s taking care of Lydia’s children right now?”
“Corky is. That is, they’re at home with him; whether he’s taking care of them is another thing.”
Tyne bit her lower lip and smiled ruefully as she saw the hopeful gleam in his eyes. She sighed.
“Okay, you can tell Lydia it will be all right for the kids.”
He winked and gave her a thumbs up as he walked away.
