Tyne had to smile. She still could not believe that this was the same Emily Milligan who, up until a year ago, had catered to her husband’s every whim, afraid to speak her mind if she didn’t agree with him. The day he had ordered Tyne out of his house and out of his life because of her love for Morley, a man whom he saw as an enemy because he was not of the Roman Catholic faith, was the turning point in her parents’ marriage. Emily Milligan had fought for her eldest child and only daughter to the point of moving out of the bedroom she had moved into as a bride twenty-six years earlier. And, since that time, she had been less of a wilting flower and more of an equal partner.
Tyne turned her Chevrolet from their long driveway onto the gravel road leading to Emblem. Thoughts of her dad brought back memories she had hoped would, by now, be long forgotten. But, although the rift had been mended, the scars had not completely healed over. A staunch Roman Catholic like Jeff Milligan still could not easily accept his daughter’s marriage to a man of the Evangelical faith. Morley had done everything in his power to be reconciled to his father-in-law, and, to give him his due, Jeff had responded with a cautious openness. But Tyne detected little warmth in her dad’s feelings towards her husband.
Because the road was quiet this weekday night, Tyne relaxed against the seat back and let her thoughts drift. It would soon be a year since she left her job at the Holy Cross Hospital, given up a promising position offered to her at the Calgary General, and broken her engagement to a man of whom her father wholeheartedly approved, a man who would have given her everything she could ever wish for – except love. She had come home, seeking her first and only true love, knowing that it may be already too late for them. Nevertheless, she had been prepared to spend the rest of her life alone rather than marry anyone except Morley Cresswell. With a trusting heart she had placed it in God’s hands, and in his faithfulness he had brought Morley back into her life.
