When we ask God to bless our food we’re really asking for his grace over it. And we’re thanking him for giving it to us.” He glanced at Tyne as she sat down at the table, and she noted his barely detectable shrug. “I know it’s hard for you to understand right now,” he said to the wide-eyed children, “but we’ll talk about it again.”
“But why …?” Rachael began.
“Why is your friend called Grace? Well, sometimes moms and dads give their little girls that name because they also are gifts, or blessings, from God.”
Rachael pushed her lower lip into a pout. “I wish I was called Grace.”
“But Rachael is a lovely name, too. Someday I’ll tell you a story about another girl named Rachael who lived a long time ago. But right now, it’s time to eat.”
“Yes!” both children chorused eagerly.
“Good, then let’s join hands and bow our heads.”
Once again the children looked bewildered but they wordlessly complied. Bobby looked down at his plate. Clearly, he wondered how long it was going to be before he could dive into his food.
“Heavenly Father,” Morley began, “thank you for bringing Rachael and Bobby to our home today. Thank you that their mom is doing well in the hospital and getting good care. And now we thank you for this food, and ask you to bless it to our use, and bless the hands that lovingly prepared it. Amen.”
Morley raised his head and, with a smile, nodded at the children. They took that as a signal to pick up their forks and begin shoveling food into their mouths. Bobby didn’t even pause when Morley reached over to cut up his meat. Tyne glanced helplessly at her husband.
“Tomorrow,” he mouthed when she caught his eye. And she understood his meaning in that single word – We’ll deal with this tomorrow.
The meal over, Morley pushed back from the table. Rachael had already made a move to get up and been told to sit down until everyone had finished their dessert. She was now in a pout, and sat with her head down.
