“Mary has been with us for a little while; her office is next
to Father Jerome’s,” Dylan interfered.
“Then we are both new to this facility,” Anton said smiling
at the girl, “I too wish you peaceful days and nights,” he added.
Mary lowered her eyes and a sudden tear dripped down
her face. A tear she cleverly hid with a sudden movement of her
palm, which surely didn’t escape Anton’s attention although he
said nothing.
“Aren’t you going late to your lunch Mary?” Dylan asked.
“Yes, I know,” she said.
“Are you on duty today?” Dylan continued.
“I’m on duty tonight,” Mary said.
Anton looked at her and smiled again. She had just raised
her eyes and noticing Anton’s smile, she smiled back at him. Their
glances met only for a few seconds yet in those short fateful seconds
Anton’s eyes remained wide open and surprised by the faint
sadness spread over Mary’s eyes, surely a sadness anyone could discern,
surely the sadness of the melancholy sky and moribund light
the sun of which suddenly disappeared behind dark clouds, surely
the sadness of a open plain without the gleaming, flashing sun rays.
“Welcome to the School Anton,” she repeated before she’d
walk away.
“Thank you Mary; hope to see you soon,” Anton said.
“I hope so too,” she said and left them.
Anton and Dylan walked to the end of the hallway and
left the bins at the sleeping quarters of the kids then they went
down to the laundry room.
“I have never seen such melancholy eyes,” Anton said.
The old man avoided saying anything but Anton insisted
by repeating, “so much sadness Dylan…so much sadness in
Mary’s eyes.”
