married the man I loved,
and never regretted it one day of our thirty years together. But tell
me now,” Millie shuffled around on the settee so that she could better
face Tyne, “tell me more about this Morley of yours. The few times
I’ve been in his company he seemed like a nice lad … and a good
looking one, too.”
Tyne smiled softly, her thoughts on the stocky young man with the
dark brown curls falling over his forehead. “He is nice. You know his
parents, I think. They have the farm just north of the Becker’s place,
west of town. Six months ago, Morley’s dad gave him a loan of the
down payment on a farm adjacent to them – the old Heinrich place.”
Millie nodded. “Yes, I know the place. And what about this church
of theirs?”
“It’s Evangelical,” Tyne said eagerly. “I don’t know very much
about it … naturally I haven’t been to a service there, or even inside
the door. But I know that the people who attend there, just like Morley,
are more than Sunday Christians.”
Tyne grinned, and Millie’s lips turned up at the corners.
“Morley gave me a Bible,” Tyne said. “It’s bound in red leather –
lovely. I told him I’d always keep it as nice as the day he gave it to me,
and do you know what he said?”
Millie shook her head from side to side while watching Tyne’s face.
“He said he hoped not. He said he hoped some day to see it falling
apart.”
Millie smiled broadly. “I think I like your Morley very much.”
Tyne reached out to squeeze her aunt’s plump arm, and then
jumped to her feet. “I’d better go, Auntie. It must be getting late and
Dad will expect me at the newspaper office early in the morning.
After all, he’s paying me three dollars a day while I’m on vacation.”
“Big spender,” Millie muttered.
Tyne chuckled and began to pick up the empty glasses. “Well, it’s
considerably more than we’re paid at the Holy Cross while we’re
training.”
Millie heaved herself to her feet. “Leave the glasses, Tyne, and run
along. You know, I’ve been formulating a plan while we talked. I’d
like your parents and Jeremy to come to dinner one evening next
week, along with you and your young man.”
