“Well, I look forward to meeting Mr. Smith.”
“You will,” replied Harry with a note of warning in his tone.
“What do you mean?” asked Joel.
“Just, if he wants this place as badly as I figure he does, you will
see him in a hurry.”
“Now, why would a big successful operator like Smith want
what is left of this little place?” asked Joel.
“Because it’s here.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, good god man, take a look around you. He has consumed
everything else in this part of the world. This ranch yard
is the only thing he doesn’t control. I bet he has big plans for it. I
wouldn’t be surprised if one of his boys isn’t already fixing to
move here so that they can keep an eye on their cows from both
sides of the hills. Sure would make life easier for them. Pretty little
ranch yard too. People always said the Circle H should have
been on postcards it is so pretty. You just watch. You’ll meet Mr.
Buck Smith in a hurry.”
“So you think he will want to buy the place?”
“More like steal,” came the quick reply.
“Well, I don’t even know if the place is for sale. What do you
think, Harry? Do you think the two of us could make a go of the
Circle H? Would you be game?”
“Got nothing else to do,” came the answer. “Kept it going with
your dad for this long. Reckon we could keep it going a while longer.
Is that what you want?”
“Don’t know what I want,” offered Joel.
“Well, you better figure that out pretty soon.”
“Why do you say that?”
“Because that one-ton that is barreling over the hills and heading
this way is Mr. Buck Smith.” With that, Harry turned and
meandered off to the tiny bunkhouse that served as his living
quarters, leaving Joel to meet his new neighbour.
It would take five maybe ten minutes for the big black one-ton
truck to reach the ranch yard.
