“Nor have I,” Tyne said thoughtfully, “that’s what concerns me.
Moe, do you think it has anything to do with Bryce Baldwin?”
Moe looked up sharply. “Dr. Baldwin? I don’t even know if she’s
still dating him. Do you think she is?”
Tyne shrugged and picked up her hairbrush from the overflowing
dresser top. “She hasn’t mentioned him lately. And that’s why I wonder
if she’s upset because he’s not calling her anymore.”
Lying in bed now, the thought of Curly’s sorrowful eyes pushed all
other images from her mind, even the face of Cameron Tournquist.
She wondered if, indeed, it had something to do with the medical intern,
or if Curly had second thoughts about a career in the OR. Had
something happened to change her mind? It seemed unlikely because,
since her first stint in surgery during their second year, Curly
had had no other desire than to work there after graduation.
She apparently excelled as a scrub nurse. One of the gynaecologists,
Dr. Kendall, had even requested that Miss Shaughnessy scrub
for him exclusively. Sister would not allow it, of course, because the
students had to have experience in all types of surgery. But Curly
had done so well during her first OR tour of duty that, when she had
been allowed to return to the service of her choice for a short time
during the last six months, her request for surgery had readily been
granted. And this time Dr. Kendall got his way. Curly scrubbed for
every operation he performed.
Tyne gave her head a vigorous shake and turned her attention to
the open Bible. She sighed over the strange words. Her church did
not encourage its adherents to read and interpret the Bible for themselves.
Again she wondered, as she so often did when she heard Aunt
Millie quote scripture, how her aunt had become so familiar with the
Book. More than once she had heard Millie say that the Word of God
was meant to be read and shared.
Tyne smiled, closed the beautifully bound book and caressed the
leather, feeling Morley’s presence as she did so. Then she opened it
again and began to read. It had opened at the Book of Psalms. Her
eyes fell upon the last verses of the Ninety-second Psalm: He shall
call upon me and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will
deliver him and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him and show
him my salvation.
