She didn’t know what to say. She felt confused and wanted to get
out of the room. “I have to go check on my other patients before I
leave.” She glanced at her dad. “See you later then?”
“Certainly. I’ll pick you up at six o’clock and we’ll have dinner at
my hotel. All right?”
“Yes, Dad.” She turned back to Arthur. “Goodbye, Mr. Tournquist.
It’s been a pleasure to meet you, and I’m sure your convalescence will
go well.”
Arthur held up a hand. “Not so fast, Miss Tyne Milligan. I’ve invited
you and your dad to my home for dinner tomorrow evening.”
“That’s right, Tyne,” Jeff said. “I accepted for you.”
“I see.” She turned to go. “Very well then, Mr. Tournquist, I’ll see
you tomorrow night.”
“See you at six,” her dad called after her.
She closed the door behind her and stood for a minute staring at
the doors on the opposite side of the corridor. What was going on?
And why had her dad come to Calgary on such short notice?
She would give anything to be able to talk to Aunt Millie right now.
The Tournquist house, Pinewoods in Mount Royal, resembled a
mansion rather than a family home. Tyne felt overwhelmed as she
and her dad were shown into the parlour by a maid. Arthur greeted
them from his easy chair by the large stone fireplace, and apologized
for not getting up. In his burgundy jacket and gray trousers, he
looked the picture of health. No one would have guessed he had so
recently been through major surgery.
From where he had been standing by the fireplace, Cam came forward
to shake Jeff ’s hand. He smiled at Tyne, then introduced them
to his mother, a tall regal woman with fair hair and the face of a
Grecian beauty. Tyne could see where Cam got his good looks. They
certainly did not come from his dad, although Arthur’s rugged features
were not displeasing.
Mrs. Tournquist greeted the newcomers warmly, and Tyne immediately
warmed to her. Her outfit of an ankle length black skirt and
white ruffled blouse was impeccable, her makeup flawless.
Although she wore her best dress of light green taffeta, Tyne felt
underdressed. She glanced at her dad.
