“But, selfish beast that I am, I’m glad you’re going to be coming to
my sister’s with me.”
Tyne gave her roommate a grateful smile. For the past twenty-four
hours, she had wavered between anger at her dad for not wanting her
to come home, and worry that what he said about her mother might
be true. She did not know what to believe, nor did she know what she
wanted to believe. I don’t want Mom to be ill. But neither can I stand
the thought that they don’t want me home for Christmas. Is it because
I told Mom I’d be going to church with Morley? Is that why they’ve denied
me the right to come home when I want to so much?
But no, it couldn’t be that. Surely her dad wouldn’t refuse to have
her home just to keep her away from Morley. But, that being the case,
then Mom must be ill. Then again, if Mom’s ill, why am I not going to
see her? I’m a nurse, aren’t I?
Tyne’s thoughts went around and around, making her incapable
of thinking straight. Even on duty she had not been able to keep her
mind on her work. It was a good thing Miss Shaw was so understanding.
Tyne knew she could defy her dad and go home as planned. After
all, he hadn’t outright refused to have her.
And really, if Mom’s sick I should be there. But no, I can’t do that. If
Mom needs me, they will call and tell me. Am I such a pariah to them
because I’ve fallen in love with Morley? What will Aunt Millie say?
She’ll be furious if she knows.
Tyne got up from where she had been sitting on her bed, and
moved restlessly around the room. She refused Moe’s offer of the bag
of peanuts. She picked up a medical textbook, put it down, straightened
the top of the desk, moved back to her bed.
“Hey, Moon River, let’s go get a hamburger. That supper wasn’t fit
for pig swill. And I noticed you didn’t even try to eat. You must be
starved.”
Tyne shook her head. “No, I’m not hungry. But I’ll go with you if
you like. Maybe I’ll have a milkshake or something.”
“Good girl. Better wrap up, it’s freezing out there.” Moe bounced
off the bed and went out to the clothes cupboard to get her parka.
Tyne followed her.
