The God Forsakes Antony
When suddenly, at midnight, you hear
an invisible, traveling company passing by
with superb music, with voices—
do not turn away, grieving
your fate that has failed you at last, work
that has come to nothing, plans for your life
that were shown up as illusions. It’s useless to mourn them.
As if you’ve been ready for some time, as if you had courage,
say goodbye to the Alexandria that is leaving.
But above all do not fool yourself, do not say
my ears were deceived, it is a dream;
do not accept such vain hopes.
As if ready for some time, as if with courage,
as if you were worthy of a city like this,
approach the window with steady steps,
and listen with emotion, but without
the grievances and whining of a coward;
listen, as a last enjoyment, listen to the voices,
to the superb instruments of the invisible company
and say goodbye to the Alexandria you are losing.
