which roamed at night, and from the barn cats which didn’t seem to mind being out in the snow during the day. Earlier she had watched as a young black cat called Spook frolicked on the powdery white path to the barn.
How the children would love it on the farm now.
A few days ago Morley had mentioned that Emblem Lake would be frozen over, and skating there would be in full swing. “How about it, hon? Are you game to try your skates out this year?”
She had grinned and said, “What do you think?” They had made plans to go on Tyne’s next day off.
Now the ice surface would be covered by the new snow, but for the avid skaters in and around Emblem, that would be no problem. Tyne’s lips parted in a smile as a two-year-old memory flooded back. She had gone to the lake with Jeremy and Cam Tournquist who was visiting from Calgary. It was a day much like today with snow blanketing the lake. Morley had brought his tractor to clear it, and had arrived on the ice only moments after she had stood in the snow on the edge of the lake and accepted Cam’s marriage proposal. Never would she forget the look on Morley’s face when he glanced over to see her in Cam’s arms.
She folded the ironing board and put it away in the utility cupboard. This afternoon she would drive into Emblem to see her mother, and pay her dad a surprise visit at the newspaper office. She didn’t see him often. They rarely visited in each other’s homes because Tyne always felt her dad’s enmity towards Morley. Jeff Milligan still held a grudge against the man who had married his daughter without his consent. Tyne sighed as she hung freshly ironed shirts in the bedroom closet. Morley was a good man, and if Jeff Milligan couldn’t see that, then it was his loss. Morley had never voiced any objection to her going to Mass every week, and sitting, as she had since childhood, with her parents in the family pew. She well knew he would have preferred her to be with him. And he had conceded to Tyne’s wishes when it came to planning for their own family. But her parents had not been told that the young couple had still not come to an agreement that their children, whenever they came along,
