from Harry, and the girl, but who was he kidding? He had been
out of this country for about thirty years, and even if he had known
a lot about horses when he was a young man, so much had changed
since he lugged his suitcase down the long and dusty road to catch
the Greyhound headed to the city.
The easy way out was to bale and sell to Smith. He just hated
to do that. Joel couldn’t guess what price Smith might be willing
to pay, but guaranteed, it was going to be something less than the
previous offer. Smith was real upset when Joel turned down the
offer, but it wasn’t as if there were other potential buyers competing
for the place.
If Joel did sell, he wondered what would happen to Harry and
Tanya. They had both been there for him. They had really
thrown themselves into the project of saving and rejuvenating
the Circle H. Joel felt that he owed them something.
He knew it was silly, but in the back of his mind there was
another reason for sticking in there and trying to make a go of the
Circle H. If he sold the ranch he really didn’t have any reason for
staying around in this part of the world. Why would he? The
truth of the matter was that he had grown quite infatuated by his
brief association with Cindy. It had been years since he had any
romantic interest in his life, and Joel was enjoying the crush he
had on this woman.
So there he stood, surrounded by the rich smells of the show
barn, he once again felt desperately alone. All alone, except for a few
people down at the other end of the barn who had heard Tanya’s
parting words and were wondering what it was that wasn’t fair. Boy,
did he ever feel crummy. Maybe he was greedy. No, that wasn’t it.
Joel realized that he had to engage in reality. And the reality of the
moment was that if he didn’t get some cash, his suppliers were
going to cut him off. With horses to feed and tractors to run, Joel
didn’t have any other options other than to see exactly how interested
this lady was in the palomino.
Joel was feeling emotionally bruised and confused from
Tanya’s verbal assault but there was one thing that he knew …
