Rachael bolted upright when the bedroom door crashed against the wall. She blinked hard in the sudden harsh glow from the ceiling light, and looked around in confusion. Bobby whimpered as he shot off the bed and grabbed his sister in a death grip. Lyssa, her ponytail of blonde hair bobbing behind her, advanced towards the sleepy duo.
“What are you doing on my bed? Bobby, get out of here. And you, Rachael, don’t you dare come in here when I’m not here.” She placed both hands on her hips and glared. “What were you doing in my room, anyway? What were you snooping around for?”
Rachael, suddenly wide awake and smarting from the insult, slid off the bed and faced her. “I was not snooping, Lyssa. This is my room, too, you know.”
The older girl snorted. “Ha! It ain’t your room, it ain’t your house, and you have no business in here without asking. And get that sniveling kid out of here.”
Rachael held Bobby tight and stood her ground. “We were only sleeping. Why are you so mean to us? What have we done to you?”
Lyssa laughed, tossed her head, then bent to straighten the covers on the bed. “It doesn’t matter. You won’t be here much longer anyway.”
Rachael’s heart leapt, and she turned to stare at her cousin.
