what created a stir in me
and captivated
the people
was my exact
likeness
to Abraham Lincoln
indeed, when my bronze statue
was erected
in one square of Piraeus
they laid
by my feet
something,
I couldn’t discern
from the top of the pedestal,
that looked like
a corpse
like a copper
stove
with burning charcoal
I waited until night came
and when I went near
to see
I discovered
with such joy
it wasn’t anything else
but
the black eyes
of the woman I love
that gleamed in
the darkness
