couldn’t get enough of. Dessert was the best blueberry pie you
could imagine, and Cindy even brought along two jugs of her own
lemonade. With Buddy doing a great job occupying little Lila, Joel
got an opportunity to really get to know Cindy, and the more he
listened to her the more he liked her. Not only was Cindy a strikingly
beautiful woman but she was also warm, kind, intelligent,
and fun. You could tell that she was a woman who took pride in
her appearance and the slim figure of her five-foot-seven frame
matched his own in height. There was no doubt about it. Cindy
was one very good-looking woman. Not only was she the best
looking woman on the Circle H this afternoon, but also in Joel’s
mind, she was probably the best looking woman in this part of
Montana. Maybe even the whole state.
But all good things have to come to an end, and as the breeze of
the west wind blew lilac fragrance through the bushes and the
birds playfully sung their songs, Cindy declared an end to the
afternoon because she needed to take Lila home. After packing
the lunch containers and loading the car, Cindy and Joel bade
each other fond farewells. Joel promised to call her and stood in
the driveway of the ranch yard to watch the car fade into the distance
as it headed back to Great Falls.
It was almost eleven at night when the phone rang and woke
Joel from his sleep in the old leather chair. Seemed that he seldom
slept in the bedroom these days. He wondered why he even
had one. It took Joel a moment to realize that he had drifted off to
sleep while reading. After a moment of hesitation, he leapt to
answer the phone.
“Hello,” he answered.
“Am I calling too late?” Cindy asked.
“Heck no,” replied Joel.
“I just wanted to thank you for the great afternoon. That was
the most fun that I have had in a long time.”
“No, no. The pleasure was all mine,” replied Joel. “I’m glad
you called.”
“Oh. Why?”
