Tyne gently slapped a forcep into it until the bleeding from the
incision was completely arrested. Then he said softly, “Ties, please.”
During this often rehearsed performance, Tyne noticed that Dr.
Scott, the patient’s family doctor, stood quietly with his hands resting
on the sterile drapes, allowing the intern to take part in the procedure
by assisting the surgeon. She couldn’t help but notice that
Cam’s hands were shaking slightly, a fact she attributed to the natural
nervousness of a first scrub. Her own hands shook a little from the
shock of seeing Cam after all these months. She wondered, irrationally,
if he remembered the kiss on that night so long ago, and her
hasty flight from his car.
What a fool I am, she thought irritably, why should he remember?
He’s probably kissed a dozen girls since then.
“Miss Milligan, are you tired, or just preoccupied? I’ve asked twice
for retractors.”
“Sorry, Doctor.” Her face flamed with embarrassment. Hastily she
handed him the retractors, passed Cam and Dr. Scott more sponges,
then turned to her scrub table for a supply of large forceps. She did
not have to look up to know that Marjory was watching her. A student
nurse had gowned and gloved herself with Marjory’s assistance,
and had joined the team around the operating table.
“Are you all right, Tyne?” Marjory whispered.
“Of course.” Tyne realized she sounded irritable. To make amends
she looked at Marjory and tried to make her eyes smile. Apparently
satisfied, Marjory turned away. Tyne took a firm hold of her emotions,
and performed flawlessly in guiding the student and assisting
the surgeon throughout the remainder of the two hour operation. 
Cam caught up to her in the OR corridor as she hurried towards
the nurses’ lounge. She heard his urgent whisper behind her. “Hey,
Tyne, wait up.”
She slowed her pace to allow him to come abreast of her. She
looked up at him and smiled. “Hi, Cam. Welcome to Valhalla.”
He grinned. “Is that what you call it?”
“Not me. One of our general practitioners.”
“Well, I can see his point. I’ve been expecting to run into you
around the hospital for the last two months.
