The Tomb of Evrion
In this elaborate tomb,
made entirely of syenite stone,
covered by so many violets, so many lilies,
the handsome Evrion is buried.
Alexandrian youth, twenty five years old.
His father’s lineage, an old line of Macedonians;
his mother’s, a lineage of magistrates.
He was a student of Aristokleitos in philosophy,
and of Paros in rhetoric. In Thebes he studied
the sacred doctrines. He wrote the history
of the Arsinoe Province. That at least will remain.
However, we’ve lost what was most valuable—his form,
which was like an Apollonian vision.
