S.O.S.
S.O.S.
Who is in danger?
It blows in the big tunnels, trains pass loaded with
soldiers and darkness
where are they headed?
S.O.S.
The world sinks
it blows on the hills, crossroads, churches
German girls, sitting in the front steps, sing
Three friends go away
far away
to the Rhine
war suddenly found them on their way
on the road
now they rot away in a foreign land
they were going to Rhine
to drink some wine
the wind mixes up gestures, events, blood
moves the borders, ravages the geographical maps
inverts the Statue of Liberty and places a huge
wooden cross in its place
the wind sweeps away clouds, nations, fires
it blows
it blows in a strange way tonight
it changes the map of the world
The soldiers stomp their feet to keep warm
the drizzle slides over the helmets
after the minister a general walks up to the podium
Heil Hitler
oh forgive me
I meant the nation’s freedom
the gloves clap
you discern the bony shoulder blades
under the ravaged overcoats of children
