Last Chance
He opened his eyes
as though to confirm his agony
while shame lingered
just around the lines
of his mouth looked embarrassed
of his old age, and you kept
your mind as far away
on a voyage you wanted to take
to a warmer place than the hospital
to lie down on the white sandbar.
Suddenly, tears rolled down your cheeks
for the pain of your sleepless night
you didn’t tell him it was okay
that he grew old, it was okay
that he was afraid of the unknown
that you also hurt and
for not being able to hold on to
his hand up to the bitter end.
