The Conjunction “or”
Then the brave Ares screamed as nine
or ten thousand men who start the battle
Iliad
When the spear of Diomedes, guided by the hand of
the goddess, pierced the side of the wild god, the helmeted,
Ares bellowed such a loud roar that frightened the Achaeans
and the Trojans, because it was, (as the poet says) as if nine
or ten thousand frenzied warriors had roared together.
Oh, that “or”
a mocking expression and at the same time noble exactness,
the ambiguous smile of uncommunicative and unparticipating
wisdom which turns decisively against itself and others,
knowing well that accuracy is impossible, that
accuracy doesn’t exist (for this reason the pompous tone
of certainty is unforgivable — God save us).
“Or”, a conjunction, modest result of the mystery of ambiguity,
deep correlation in the multiplicity of essence and phenomena
it’s with you that we adjust to the difficulties of life and dream
of the many nuances and versions between the black and
the invisible white.
