The Red Thread
The beautiful temple of Poseidon in Mantineia, which
Agamedes and Trophonius founded — without corridors
or gates with only a red thread around the entrances
which led to the adytum. No one was allowed to enter
into where the salt water spring ceaselessly flowed. Aepytus,
the headstrong king, cut the yarn and entered. Yet, he paid
for it as he was blind when he exited and soon after he died.
And now, we who know well the meaning of that red yarn,
since, despite all those easy relations of it to Fate or Ariadne
or those other ones, our fairy-tales threads, or the thread
of May when we make the first rings, always remains
inexplicable.
And there is always a yarn that separates us from God
and blindness and death awaits us when we cut it.
