his way to his truck, who should pull up but Cindy. She gave him
a big wave and smile.
“Hi stranger,” she called as she stepped from her truck. They
greeted each other with an awkward hug but Joel was thinking
that hug felt pretty good. He liked it so much that he was about to
suggest that they do it again when Cindy chimed in, “What are
you doing here?”
“I was following up on your idea. I talked with Roy and he is
going to speak to the ranchers who are having annual production
sales in the fall and see who would be interested in adding my
dozen head to their sale.”
“That’s great,” replied Cindy. “Roy is a good man and he will
take care of you.”
“How’s little Lila?” asked Joel.
“She is doing great,” replied Cindy. “Every night when I put
her to bed she asks about Buddy the Border Collie, and every
night she mentions Buddy in her prayers. She really had a swell
time at your place. We both did.”
Joel knew how much he enjoyed that afternoon, so if Cindy
and Lila had as good time as she said, it sounded to him like it
was unanimous. Even Buddy had fun.
“So, when are you coming back out?” asked Joel.
“I would love to, but it really is my turn to treat you. Why don’t
you come into town one night for dinner? How about Saturday
night?”
As he drove out of the parking lot, Joel couldn’t help but think
how nicely his life was coming together: the horses, Harry,
Tanya, Cindy, the auction, the line of credit—life was good. As
he headed out of town, Joel was thinking that he was probably the
luckiest guy in the world. There was a new lightness to his spirit.
Saturday was a few days away, but feeling the way he was right
now, Joel couldn’t wait for it to arrive.
