Long-listed for the 2023 Griffin Poetry Awards

WE NEVER spent a single night without him so that
everyone would wonder whether they fit in their lives and
when we talked to an empty basket or a passing shadow
it was perhaps an eternal hint they didn’t answer
though we always hoped; life finds us so unprepared
then as we neared the black trees I remembered the old
sealed rooms when the wax dripped slowly until suddenly
it snuffed out in the irreparable;
my glance was fixated on the curtain with such
intensity that the curtain stirred letting the small
grave sign appear, which we, when young, had
unsuspectedly hugged and since then it resided
along with other incomprehensible items
in the silence of our hearts.
