excerpt

two active children had brought into their lives by far overshadowed
the difficulties. And then, just two years after their adoption was
finalized, the family had been doubly blessed by the birth of twin
girls. The following years had been good to them. Their mixed farming
operation had grown by the addition of the senior Cresswells’
adjacent property when Morley’s father decided he could no longer
carry on. Ronald had come to work for them when he left school, and
between Morley and him they had made the farm prosper.
Yes, the years had been good before Rachael suddenly began
spending time – too much time – with Lyssa. Rachael had sometimes
been a moody, even difficult, child but more often she had been
obedient and lovable. Tyne and Morley could not have loved her more
if she had been their own flesh and blood.
Bobby had never been hard to love, and had brought joy and
laughter into their lives almost from the minute he came as a four-year-
old to their home. Tyne was sure he must have been born a natural
farmer, because the animals were a delight to him from the beginning,
and he never complained about helping with the work. Tyne
knew that, right this minute, Bobby would be doing as much as his
dad to help bring Sunshine’s calf into the world.
Tyne sighed with the realization that this calf would probably be
the last one for the faithful cow that Bobby had claimed as his own
special project since the day she was born. Tyne feared that within a
short time Bobby would not only be facing the loss of his faithful dog,
but his beloved Sunshine as well. It would be difficult, but she had no
doubt the boy could handle it.
Like Bobby, their six-year-old Susie had a positive outlook on life.
She was a tomboy, never happier than when she was playing sports or
helping with the barn chores. Katie, on the other hand, loved pretty
dresses, and spurned the jeans and shirts her sister wore.
Tyne took a sip of her now cold coffee, then got up from the swing
and went into the house to finish the mending she had started the
night before.
