THE ROCK AND THE WAVE
Excerpt
Rock, stand aside that I may pass, the brave wave says
to the dark and angry rock that blocks the shore,
stand aside, for in my breast that’s dead and cold
the dark north wind has nested and a black storm grows.
I don’t have froth for armory nor hollow roar for mist
the bloody rivers I’ve collected are the world’s grim curse
that has empowered me, the judgment of a world grown tired
that says, ‘rock you must fall, your time has come.’
When I approached you as a slave, fearful and exhausted,
when as a slave I bathed and cleansed your feet,
you stared upon me proudly and to the world you said,
behold the wretched servitude my froth endured
while I, with all my work and service to your highness,
dug your foundation and day by day consumed your flesh,
for in the wounds I gave your tomb I have constructed,
concealed with seaweed, and buried in the sand.
Bow down, behold your roots amid the ocean’s depths!
I have demolished your foundations, you have become a shell.
Stand aside then, rock, that I may raise the slave’s foot
and step upon your neck! I’ve awakened like a lion.
