excerpt

Talal looks at her with teary eyes; she has grown into a very pretty young
woman. She’s tall, thin, and has a good complexion; he feels proud seeing her
and listening to the way her life has turned out since he left his family to go to the
United States.
“I promise you I’ll come to the wedding with Emily, and we’ll have a blast!”
Aesha is very happy to hear that and gives him a hug.
“Thank you, my brother. I look forward to seeing you at the wedding.”
“What about you, young man, are you still going to school?” Talal asks Abdul.
“No, he’s not,” his sister says.
“Why?”
“He doesn’t like the school very much; sometimes he works in the factory
with me and he earns a few dinars, enough to buy what he needs.”
They spend another hour in the sweet conversation of family matters, and as
time goes by, they realize they have to get back as Ibrahim and Mara are
expecting them to have lunch together. Talal promises Aesha to come back in a
few days to meet her fiancée, and at the same time, to see his grandfather, who’s
still in the coffee bar enjoying the company of his friends.
