And how, Tyne thought. Out loud she said, “Oh yes, he certainly
has. Mr. Tournquist is very entertaining.”
She glanced at him in time to see his fleeting, smug smile. 
“What have you been telling your parents?”
Cam turned his eyes away from the busy street for a moment to
glance at Tyne where she sat in the car beside him. “What do you
mean, exactly?”
“They seem to be under the impression that we’re getting married
… at least your dad is.”
Cam gave a low whistle. “Good ole Dad, always jumping the gun.
I didn’t tell him that, Tyne, why would I?” Before she could reply, he
added, “But I’d like to tell him that, if you’ll give me permission.”
Tyne sighed. “We’ve been through this before, Cam. My position
hasn’t changed since ten days ago.”
“Which is?”
Tyne stared out of the window at the lights of approaching traffic.
“That I’m not ready to make a commitment. Please try to understand.
I enjoy your company, Cam. In fact, I think the world of you.
But that isn’t enough, as I’m sure you’ll agree.”
“Sorry, honey.” He sounded humble, which surprised her. Cam
was kind, gentle and usually understanding, but never humble.
“I’ll try hard to be patient,” he said, still in the same tone. He
pulled the car up to the front of her apartment house. “Will I see you
tomorrow evening?”
Tyne looked at him. “Don’t you ever work anymore, Doctor?”
He grinned. “Believe it or not, I’m free for three evenings in a row.
Don’t that beat all?”
“Okay, tomorrow … for a little while, but I need my rest. I didn’t
get much sleep this past week.”
He pulled her into his arms and kissed her. “Until tomorrow then,”
he whispered against her cheek. “And I promise I’ll have you home
before the rooster crows the next morning.”
She pulled away, laughing. “Oh, Cam, you’re incorrigible.”
And very sweet, she thought, as he lifted her valise from the trunk
of his car, and escorted her up the steps to the door.
