…over and gently took her hand. “Bobby’s going to be all right, Tyne. Dr. Baldwin sounded encouraging.”
Tyne took a deep breath and let it out on a sigh. “I’m trying to be positive, Auntie. And I know Bryce Baldwin is highly thought of as a pediatrician. But Bobby will lose some fingers, won’t he?”
Millie nodded. “They think so. Then again, it’s still too early to tell. But poor Ronald – his life isn’t in danger but he will lose toes, and fingers as well.” She sighed and stretched her chubby legs out in front of her. “And Dr. Baldwin says one ear is pretty bad.”
For several moments they sat holding each others’ hands, then Millie said quietly, “Remember when I taught you some of the psalms from the Bible?”
Tyne looked at her and nodded.
“Do you remember your favourite one?”
A smile parted Tyne’s lips. “Of course, the Twenty-third.”
“Then let’s say it together right now. It will help us remember who’s in charge here.”
They bowed their heads and Aunt Millie began, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.”
Tyne joined in, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, He leadeth me beside the still waters, He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for Thou art with me, Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me ….”
Tyne could go no further. She burst into tears, and Millie held her until the storm had passed. Then, in her ever practical manner, Millie stood up and announced, “I’m going to get us coffee and something to eat. I know there’s no point in asking you to go to the cafeteria, so I’ll bring it here. And don’t say you’re not hungry because you’ve hardly eaten a thing since breakfast – and I don’t even know if you ate that, since I wasn’t there.”
By the time she had finished her speech and headed out the door, Tyne was smiling. She wiped her eyes and sat back on the sofa. What would she do without Aunt Millie? It didn’t bear thinking about. Before Tyne had been discharged from the hospital yesterday, Morley…
