Temethos of Antioch (400 A.D.)
Verses of young Temethos the lovestruck poet.
With the title “Emonides, the adored lover of
Antioch Epiphanes, a very good-looking
young man from Samosata. But if the verses turned out
warm, emotional, it is because Emonides
(from that ancient epoch,
one hundred thirty-seven years of the Greeks’ reign!
Perhaps even before that) was put in the poem
merely as a name, though a most appropriate name.
The poem expresses the love of Temethos
his beautiful and worthy love. We, the initiated,
his close friends, we the initiated
know who these verses were written for.
The ignorant Antiocheans read, “Emonides.”
