POEM BY NANOS VALAORITIS
THE KNOCK
The knock of the door
created panic
the heartbeat
in heavy winter
whipping of the whip
on the back of the punished man
the hit of the ruler
in the open hand
the bells chimed
during Easter
dramas and tragedies
on the stony seats
we waited for an answer
from someone on the phone
yet we forgot what was the question
when we were on stage
who are you and where you come from
what is your official name
how do your relatives call you
what name do you give to the police?
We went out to the streets
in protest
with empowering slogans
about our world view
we felt we fought unjustifiably
being hit straight on our heads
face to face on a battle
with the handbook of history
