She listened eagerly as Dave proudly told her about his sixmonth-
old son.
When, an hour later, he got up to go, Dave said, “Why don’t you
come over and meet Penny and the baby? It’s less than two miles by
road. Can you drive the pickup?”
“Oh, I think I could, but it really isn’t too far to walk, is it? I’m
sure your wife wouldn’t think so, being from England.”
He grinned broadly, put on his hat and opened the door. His
horse stood patiently in the yard, the reins trailing on the ground as
Dave had left them.
Sarah looked at the animal wistfully. “I’ve been meaning to ask
Ben if there’s a saddle horse on the farm I can ride. Then I could
ride over to your place any time.”
Dave hesitated, and Sarah saw a frown crease his forehead. “You
ride then?”
“Yes, I had my own horse in Tillsonburg. I kept her on a farm on
the outskirts of town, but when I left home to go to work I had to
give her up.” Sarah smiled wistfully. “ I haven’t ridden much since,
and I’ve missed it.”
She watched him mount and ride away; or rather she watched
the horse. It was a chestnut gelding. She liked the way it stepped.
She really must speak to Ben soon about a mount for herself.
Her heart felt lighter as she went back to work. The prospect of
having a friend nearby was enough to dispel the loneliness that had
been growing in her daily since she arrived on the farm. She was
anxious to meet Penny McNeill and her child. She had missed the
children over the past few years. It had almost broken her heart to
leave her school in the middle of term, so attached had she become
to the little ones in her charge. There had been little contact with
children since that time and, in all honesty, she had to admit that
one of the reasons she wanted to marry was to have a family of her
own.
Well, she thought wryly, if Ben continued as he had been doing,
her wish must soon be granted. Since their first night together his
sexual appetite had been insatiable. But, as on their wedding night,
he had taken her again and again with no thought for her own fulfilment,
or her discomfort.
