Tyne took a sip of her now cool tea. “I can understand that. She probably feels a little overwhelmed, especially since you are now her supervisor. I feel a little the same, although I don’t work under you.”
Carol Ann grasped Tyne’s hand. “Oh, dear friend, don’t ever feel that I’ve changed from the Curly who was, and is, your friend. One of the nicest things I’ve heard for a long time was when you called me Curly on the ward the other day. So please, don’t ever stop calling me that.”
They left the dining room together. In the elevator on their way back to the children’s ward, Tyne said, “I’d be delighted to see your mother again. She was so good to me at the lowest time in my life. We’ve kept in touch since I left Calgary but it’s not the same as talking face to face.”
“I told her you were here, Tyne. Would you like her to visit you here, or perhaps at Moe’s?”
Tyne smiled. “I’d love it. I’ll call her tonight.”
At the entrance to the ward, Carol Ann said goodbye and hurried off to her duties. Tyne continued down the corridor to the room where she had spent so much time in the last three days. Aunt Millie was sitting by Bobby’s bed, reading a book to him, although his eyelids were half-closed and he did not appear to be listening. Since the day he had become fully conscious, the nurses were keeping him lightly sedated because of the pain in his hands and feet.
Millie looked up when she heard Tyne enter the room, and she nodded her head towards a woman who stood at Ronald’s bedside. Tyne looked at her without recognition until she turned around. Then her eyes locked with those of Ruby Harrison.
For a moment neither spoke. Then Ruby said quietly, “Hello, Tyne. I was hoping I’d see you here.”
Tyne did not feel like being civil. In fact, she felt like scratching the woman’s eyes out – or gouging them out, just as this woman’s daughter had done to Rachael’s doll. Her gut clenched, and she felt light-headed with the anger that washed over her. She felt a movement beside her, and realized that Aunt Millie had left Bobby’s bedside and walked towards them.
