“Alright, Dean.”
Hermes noticed that his demand caused a reaction from the
dean, and although he only showed an imperceptible discomfort
with Hermes’s words, he managed to conceal it. However, he felt that
such a subject should be discussed at this time. Honesty could lead to
a solid friendship. That was what Hermes always believed in.
“Now it is my turn to ask a favour of you, Hermes.”
“No problem, Dean.”
“The country we are talking about is Canada. McGill University
and the University of British Columbia are the two we recommend,
and I have personally contacted them. Should we get a positive
response from either of the two, and Canada is where you would like
to go, I’d like you to do a short research project for me about their
stock exchange system, with as many details as possible about their
operations and regulations, federal or provincial. I am looking into
ways of applying similar things here in our stock exchange.”
“Of course, Dean. When I’m there, I’ll make sure I get this information
for you. I have also noticed that many areas in our school
system and in our society need and must improve.”
“I’m aware of that, too, Hermes. Now, you see, these are examples
of how you can make so much difference in the way things are
done here. Another reason why I recommended you to the minister
was that I could find wisdom in your words, and I’m sure we are going
to have an excellent working relationship when you come back.”
“I look forward to that, Dean. Perhaps we may be able to effect
some good changes to help all our countrymen.”
“Now, now, Hermes, we don’t want to go too far for now, do we?”
“I guess you are right, Dean. We’d better leave the subject of the
political situation for some other day. I do strongly believe that the
changes have to start from the top . . .”
The dean turned and looked at the other side of the room before
he cleared his throat and commented,
“Hermes, don’t forget to get into the details of the applications
and all the rest. Keep me posted with whatever happens.”
