…so much more desperate than she wanted to believe. She took a deep breath and squeezed Moe’s hand. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound ungrateful. It’s just that I can’t believe this is happening.”
“He said he’d like to go to the police station rather than call. Better if he can talk face to face with them. And if you have a picture he can take … oh wait, I have your wedding photo.”
“I have a small picture in my purse … I always carry it with me ….” Try as she would to stop them, the tears came in a flood. Moe held her and whispered words of encouragement that Tyne hardly heard. At last she looked up, and said with a confidence she did not feel, “Tell Ken I’ll go with him.”
The drive to the Calgary Police detachment, and the minutes spent waiting to talk to an officer, seemed interminable. Tyne sat beside Ken on a hard-backed chair, holding the photos of Morley – one from her wallet, the other of their wedding eight months earlier. How happy they had been. Rather than look into the camera, Morley had insisted on turning his head to gaze at his bride, as if he couldn’t get enough of her radiant features.
Tyne grasped her upper lip between her teeth. She had to stop staring at the pictures. There would be other photos as the years went by. There would be other memories to make and share. As if someone spoke aloud, she heard a gentle voice in her mind, The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters; He restoreth my soul ….
“Okay, Tyne, they’re calling us.” Ken took her arm and held it as she got up and walked beside him to a small room where a middle-aged police officer sat behind a table.
He introduced himself as Constable Martinson, and invited them to sit down. Tyne was surprised to realize she was trembling as Ken guided her to a chair facing the officer. Until this moment she could almost believe that the past four days were only a dream, that Morley had not disappeared, that he was safe at home looking after the farm. Now, by putting it in the hands of the police, she had to admit to herself and to everyone, that something terrible may have happened to her husband.
