The Finals
AQHA World Championships
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Today is the day, Joel thought as he rolled out of bed. This is
what it was all about. He knew that Tanya had nothing to
worry about. She had the filly performing so well that all she had
to watch out for was blowing a pattern. But for Joel, it was a different
story. His fifteenth place finish yesterday was good, but his
run in the finals needed to be better if he had any hope of a top
placing. He hoped to do as good as he did yesterday and find a
couple of more points. As he dressed in his best Wranglers and a
new, bright yellow Cinch shirt, he knew that this wasn’t just
about reining anymore. For Joel, this was all about his comeback.
He couldn’t think of a better way to prove that he was back than
to go as far as he could tonight. But there were nineteen others to
compete with, so if he was going to get a top placing in the finals
he would have to earn it. And isn’t that how life works. Reality
requires us to earn all of the good things in life.
After a quick breakfast at the hotel, Joel and Tanya headed to
the show grounds to work their horses in preparation for the
finals. Now they were saddled and ready to go. Nervous as all
heck, Joel tried to get himself together. Tanya, on the other hand,
was looking and sounding very confident.
Aware of his mind screaming all of the wrong things at him,
Joel dug deep down inside. Ignoring his chattering mind by focusing
on the task at hand, Joel moved the big buckskin into the
warm-up arena. Sitting quietly, side by side on their horses…
