…and over the slight rise leading to the snow-obliterated beach, they
saw the lake stretched out before them. But today it was full of activity,
as skaters with crude board-like snowploughs glided over the ice,
side by side, pushing the fluffy white stuff ahead of them.
Jeremy scrambled from the car almost before Cam had brought it
to a full stop beside a line of other vehicles. Hailing his pals, Jeremy
raced to the edge of the lake and hunkered down on a log that had
been cleared off to allow skaters to sit while putting on their skates.
Tyne and Cam followed more slowly. Behind them, they heard another
car pull into the parking area.
Cam put his arm around her as they made their way to the log
where Jeremy sat. “This is great, honey. I’m sure glad you asked me to
come to Emblem in winter. I didn’t expect anything like this, having
been a city boy all my life.”
Tyne looked up at him and smiled. “It’s pretty in summer, too.”
“I’m sure. Then perhaps we’ll come here often for our holidays,
and camp out by the lake. Would you like that?”
“Assuming, of course ….”
“That you’ll marry me,” he finished for her.
She sat down on the log which Jeremy had already vacated. Cam
dropped his rented skates beside her and took hers from her hand.
“Let me,” he said, kneeling in the snow in front of her.
“Oh, Cam, you don’t have to do that. Really, I can put my own
skates on. Look, your knees will get wet.”
He grinned up at her. “Stop arguing, Miss Milligan, and put your
dainty foot into this boot.”
Laughing, she did as he commanded. Silently, and deftly, he
worked until her skates were laced, then he looked up. “While I’m
down here, I may as well do what I’ve wanted to do for a long time.”
He paused, grinning, and Tyne raised her eyebrows.
His face grew suddenly serious. His voice barely audible above
the chorus of happy voices from the lake, he said quietly. “Will you
marry, me, Tyne?”
For several moments she stared at him, her heart racing. And in
those moments, she felt something stir within her. Her lips moved
but no sound came. Finally, she whispered, “Yes, Cam, I will.”
His face lit up like the sun which had managed just a moment before
to force itself through the gray clouds.
