Really, thought Joel. He didn’t know that.
Riding to the center of the arena, Joel readied himself and the
big buckskin for reining pattern number six. Joel halted the horse
to face the judges. With a subtle adjustment of the reins and a
slight shift of his weight in the saddle, Joel asked the buckskin to
start the first of four spins to the left. By the time they were on
the second spin they were flying. The long reins were trailing out,
and it seemed that at this speed of revolution, they could almost
take off. And then they stopped dead, on a dime. This was immediately
followed by four equally impressive spins to the right and
another dead stop. After a moment of hesitation, Joel asked for
the right lead departure and the buckskin jumped into the first of
three circles to the right. The first, large and fast; the second,
small and slow; and the third was another large and fast circle.
And then at the center of the arena, Joel signaled a lead change to
the left. The buckskin immediately shifted into the new lead and
completed the identical set of circles, this time to the left. Finishing
up the last of the circles, he steered the horse back across the
center, picked up another lead change, and started a large fast circle
to the right. Coming around the end of the arena, Joel ran the
buckskin straight down the side, past the center, and performed a
flawless sliding stop and rollback that left the crowd gasping. He
headed back around to the end of the arena and down the other
side, executing a spectacular sliding stop and an explosive rollback
that had the crowd on their feet and clapping wildly. What
the heck, he had come this far, what did he have to lose? Joel
called for accelerated speed from the buckskin as he rounded the
end of the arena one last time and blasted down the side with
incredible velocity.
