Putting the car into gear she set off slowly, disciplining herself
to drive carefully for the remaining mile to Emblem & District
Hospital. Her actions had been foolish, she realized now. The officer
had been right – it wouldn’t help Aunt Millie if she had an accident.
And she had a husband and children who depended on her as well.
Ever since Ronald’s phone call that morning, Tyne had been in a
state of anxiety. Aunt Millie had apparently awakened in the early
morning hours with abdominal pain. Ronald, rising before six o’clock
to come to the farm, had found her sitting in the kitchen, sipping
ginger tea. Nothing to worry about, she had told him – a bad bout
of indigestion probably. But Ronald, noting her ashen face and short
gasping breaths, had insisted on driving her to the hospital from
where he had called first the Cresswells and then the Milligans.
Leaving Rachael in charge of getting the twins up and off to
school, Tyne had hurried to her car for the short trip to Emblem.
Morley, on his way to the barn for the morning milking, held her
briefly before opening the car door for her. “Aunt Millie is in God’s
hands. Drive safely.”
Well, apparently she hadn’t listened to her husband because she
hadn’t been driving safely. She quietly thanked God for keeping
her safe by sending that young police officer to remind her of her
responsibilities.
She turned into the familiar driveway that led to the one storey
building. How many times had she driven this road on her way to
work in the years before and after she had married Morley? But today
she would not be stopping at the staff parking lot near the ambulance
entrance. She drove on to the visitors’ area where she noted with
some surprise the size of the maples on the perimeter. They had been
little more than saplings when she first started work here.
Tyne parked the car and hurried to the front entrance. As she
pushed the door open, she thought how fortunate she and Morley
were to have made this trip so seldom over the years, even with four
active children.
