Chapter Eight

Tyne stayed by her aunt’s bedside until mid-afternoon when
the nurses came to take Millie to the OR. Only once had
she left her – to get a quick bite to eat in the dining room, and during
that time the visiting surgeon had arrived and completed his examination.
Tyne felt sorry to have missed him but she knew that Dr.
Dunston would have brought in only the very best.
Holding her aunt’s limp hand, she walked beside the stretcher
to the operating room doors, where she bent to kiss the pale cheek.
“I’ll be here when you get back to your room, Auntie. God bless
you.”
Tears threatened when she saw Millie’s eyes open and heard her
whisper, “And bless you. Thank you.”
Tyne stood and watched until the doors closed behind the entourage.
In her mind’s eye she saw everything that was taking place
behind those doors at this minute and would take place in the hours
to come. And suddenly she wished she didn’t know so much. Some
wise person had once said that ignorance is bliss, and Tyne believed
it at this moment. Whispering a prayer, she turned and headed for
the matron’s office, where she knew Miss Larson waited to help her
through this day. And from there, too, she could call Morley to tell
him Aunt Millie had just gone into surgery.
Inge Larson greeted her with a smile. “Come in and sit down,
Tyne. You’re a sight for sore eyes. We haven’t seen much of you lately.”
Tyne took the chair facing the tall middle-aged woman seated behind
her desk. “Sorry about that. The days just seem to slip away on me.”
