Clearette
when captain Heracles
with his ship
brings me to Preveza
to the dark gate of the castle
that leads from the harbour
to the central street
with the tower and the clock
the colourful group
of gypsy girls
the ovens that shine
at the far end
of the dark bakeries
and the standing golden loaves of bread
on the long counters
in the low-display windows
and the many roses
roses everywhere
in the orchards
climbing on the fences
the front steps of homes —
where are the crows
the poet saw?
Here Heracles saw the light
for the first time
since I started with Heracles
the proud lion
of freedom
