Ronnie laughed. “We worked the kid too hard today, but he
wouldn’t stop until we did. He’s probably in dreamland by now.”
“Rachael went for a walk a while ago,” Morley said. “It’s a nice evening
and the poor girl’s been stuck in the house all day.”
Ronald got up – somewhat abruptly, Tyne thought. “I’d better get
home,” he said as he turned to the door. “Another long day tomorrow,
eh?”
“Yes, as long as the weather holds; and it looks like it will.” Morley
got to his feet. “Thanks, Ron, we did well today.”
Ronald bade them a hurried good night and went out, causing
Tyne to cast a questioning look at her husband. When he said nothing,
she shrugged, took another sip of coffee and stood up.
“I’ll look in on the twins, but I hope they’re asleep. Do you have
anything else to do, dear?”
“Yep, just one last check of the barn. I won’t be long.” He put his
hat on and went out.
As Tyne made her weary way up the stairs, she thought again of
Ronald’s hasty exit. What was that about? Oh well, he had something
on his mind which was probably none of her business. Besides
she was too tired to think about it. As she reached the landing and
passed Rachael’s open door she thought, I hope Rachael comes in
soon, it’s almost dark.
