“Yes, you are, baby. Don’t you deserve a holiday now that school’s
over for the summer?”
She sat back. It sounded too tempting. But then reality set in.
“Yeah well, where would I get the money for the bus ticket, huh? Tell
me that, Mr. Know-it-all.”
He looked at her with a knowing grin. “Is that what Lyssa told
you? That she’s going on the bus? Not so, baby. Me and Joe are driving
her.” He thumped the steering wheel. “Woohoo, all the way to the
Pacific Ocean.”
Rachael sat with her mouth open, staring at him. He expected her
to go to the West Coast, all that way, several days maybe, with Lyssa
and two guys? He must be out of his mind for even thinking she would.
When she didn’t respond he looked at her keenly. “Whatdaya say,
Rachael? You game?”
She started to shake her head but he grabbed her hand. “Listen,
kid, tell me you’ll think about it, okay?”
She jerked her hand away from him and pushed the door open.
“Yeah sure, I’ll think about it.” Not in this lifetime, she added under
her breath.
She was exiting the car when sudden bright lights indicated that
another vehicle was pulling up beside them. Kevin turned to stare
at the driver who got out and stood looking over the hood of his car.
With a start, Rachael recognized Ronnie’s white Chevy coupe. Her
first impulse being to hide, she hunkered down beside Kevin’s Ford
sedan. But Ronnie had seen her, and she heard his shout.
“Rachael, what are you doing? Get over here.”
She straightened up and glared at him in the murky light. “Don’t
order me around, Ronald Harrison. I’m just going home, and you’d
better do that, too.”
Kevin peered out at her. “Who is this guy?”
“My brother. I gotta go.” She slammed the car door, and turned to
walk away but not before she heard him say, “Oh dear, big brother has
come to rescue his little sister from the bad man.”
